A just-born Black Swallowtail fresh from the chrysalis, seemingly tame in sleepy newness. My Audubon field guide does not
list Texas as a natural range for either of the Dessert, Eastern or Western Black, but their listed host plants do grow here. His `eyespot´ marks appear to be undeveloped or perhaps, nipped-off by a bird,
complicating identification. From the descriptions I would venture this to be a `Western´, although the text reads:
...the Western black cannot tolerate suburban habitats.
