Yes, the Burgunday glow was the one I was wondering about, I think I read it hasn't spread well for you? Such a shame! The variegation is really nice!

Maggie, do you have any idea what rose that is??
I have never seen a variegated rose before! Is it a once bloomer? Kind of reminds me of a.....species by its leaves...could it be Cherokee Rose?

I'll try to get a picture or 2 of the variegated hidden ginger today and maybe a few other plants that for the life of me I can't remember now :-)

By Maggie on Saturday, June 28, 2003 - 12:39 am: Edit Post

I was saying the BG ajuga will not do well for me if the soil isn't manure-rich. There's no prob with that these last couple a years tho, with the mushroom compost in the beds. It has poultry manure. Pill bugs used to eat it faster than it could grow, but now they do not hinder it at all. Course, there are less of them now, too.

Ah that rose is a fav plant of mine. Yes, it is a species, once-bloomer. Came from a farmer in the so of England who said it had been in the family for generations. After learning of its history, I suspect its been growing on the farm for centuries. His family calls it the Pimpernel. Its Latin is Pimpernelifolia and this vari form appears to be few and far between. I’ve never been able to find ref or a pic of this varig one on the net. I’ve always kept it in a pot before, so we are about to find out ‘if’ or how badly it suckers in the ground.

I have also tucked this vari hibiscus into the red and white bed and hope to remember to dig it up before frost. Wish I had three of them for instant flowerbed gratification :-)

Ah, ok! After reading the long informative posts, I lose parts :-) I have a friend who has chickens, I'll have to try that! Might even try the MC and see if the aliens still live there. I really like that ajuga. I wish you the best on the var. rose, hope it doesn't get carried away! Does it have a scent? I have one of the var. Hibiscus, but couldn't figure out where to put it...what conditions do you have yours in? I put a picture of the var. hidden ginger on that webshots page. I wish I could figure out how to direct link..I am going to try in about 30 minutes once it loads to the site. David, where are your pictures?? hmm?

By CAC on Saturday, June 28, 2003 - 7:40 am: Edit Post

ok, I am going to try to direct link.

crud.. here is the image location...it doesn't make sense.. http://community.webshots.com/photo/78695341/78761919PHaQrP

By Maggie on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 1:23 am: Edit Post

I know exactly what you mean about 'losing parts' of these long posts. :-)

On the chicken poop, it sure has to be VERY well composted before using, as it is a really 'hot' manure that will burn plants to death.

I haven't detected a scent on the rose. They are only tiny blooms, about nickle sized.

Okay, that html stuff won't work on this forum. The directions for posting pics directly from your computer are under the "formatting" link to your left.
Not that they make any sense to me. ;-)

I downloaded this from the above page, sized it to 42K, to put it here.
var ginger

first you type
\image
immediately followed by curly brackets{enclosing the pic name}
When you hit the 'post' button, you will get a box that says 'your image here'. If so, hit the post button again and it will let you browse your files for the pic. Click on the file pic to open it in the forum form. Then hit the post bit again to get it to load your message with pic.

If that doesn't confuse you enough, have a look at the formatting directions too. :-) eek

Yeah David,,,,,, we're waiting :-)
He has an awesome collection of variegated lovelies to share.

Ok, I got the posting image part right, now need to figure out where to add the text :-) This is a variegated potato bush I got 2 years ago, it is just barely coming up by the fountain/pond. Thanks for the heads up Maggie!

By Maggie on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 10:23 pm: Edit Post

Good for you to take that on Cac. And I see you've mastered the sizing on the other thread. I'll take that really bigun off and repost it smaller, below.
340 or 350 pixels is a good size for the forum pics.

You can type your text in the same message box as the pics. Just do the \image bit wherever you want the pic to appear in the message.
Like this..

Now you must tell us about this lovely thing. :-) I have never had one before.

And,,, I forgot to say ,, that vari hidden ginger is lovely. I only have the reg one, but do love its shy blooms. It grows right outside a very low window where we can see its brief bloom for indoors too.
One of its leaves is poking into the top of this pic of a Variegated bougainvillea that I sunk into the bed - pot and all, so I can easily lift it for overwintering.

That Boug. is very neat! Love that strong color! Hopefully the var. ginger will spread so I will have extra. The potato bush is a member of solanum, nightshade, haven't been able to find out much about it. Mine hasn't gotten tall, is bushy in habit, blooms small blue flowers, then has orange colored fruits. I have it in mostly shade. That is about all I know besides it seems to be hardy here.

Love that Hibiscus!

Here's one of my favorite verigated groundcovers. It even stayed green all winter for me. It is now taking hold nicely and spreading rapidly. I hope to have the whole bed filled in by next spring - and all from only 6 little plugs.

Please try again MK, the pic didn't stick.

David has sent this gorgeous thing without any explaination.

Is it at your place D? And dare I try to guess ;)
... perhaps an enormous violet, or an amazing Ligularia?

By David on Tuesday, July 01, 2003 - 7:24 am: Edit Post

This plant is at my mother's friends house....It is a Ligularia tussilaginea 'Varagata'....She has three growing in her garden and all are stunning...........It is a $$$ plant to buy if you can find it in the trade or mail order....You tell me is it worth it?????

Guess I should not have stayed away so long, my posting skills are very rusty.

I've so admired that lovely thing from afar, but have never had it last very long here - suspect it can't take our heat, or it just didn't like where it was put,, maybe too dry for it. A relative of it that I like very much, grows by leaps and bounds, but it is not half as pretty. Great pic MK, thanks

By CAC on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 7:11 am: Edit Post

Ligularia eh? I am not real familiar with that plant. WHat conditions does it take? I love the cram and white var. on it.

MK, is silver beacon a Lamium? That is very pretty!

By mamakane on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 8:04 pm: Edit Post

Yes a Lamium. I have to stop and look up the proper names, so I just rely on posting pictures. Maggie can ususally fill in the names for me :-)

By CAC on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 8:27 pm: Edit Post

MK, I can't seem to keep up with tags or labels :-) Too many neat plants out there I have no idea about! I try to take pictures and label them, also try to do a layout on paper showing where I planted what just incase. Where does that lamium grow in your garden, what conditions? Love those variegated plants!

By mamakane on Tuesday, July 08, 2003 - 2:10 pm: Edit Post

I've tried the paper layout also, then I go and move something to a hopefully better location and forget to move it on the paper. Oh well, as long as it grows.

This one is growing quite happily in 3/4 shade and fairly dry.

By CAC on Tuesday, July 08, 2003 - 3:11 pm: Edit Post

It is a neat plant :-) I have alot of scratch outs on my paper layouts.

By david barnett on Wednesday, July 09, 2003 - 10:21 pm: Edit Post

I use to try and keep the plastic labels, in the ground or in pots.....I hate to lose the name's of plants....I noticed one day, birds and squirrels taking out the tags, while they were looking for worms and bugs in my pots and plantings in my flowerbeds.......I just kept thinking it was me, not labeling the plants or pots in the first place......

By Maggie on Thursday, July 10, 2003 - 8:16 pm: Edit Post

Hey,, good idea,,, I'm going to use that one too. ;-)

By mamakane on Monday, July 14, 2003 - 10:33 am: Edit Post

David do you have a picture to back that one up? :-)

By David on Monday, July 14, 2003 - 3:46 pm: Edit Post

No, picture...just in my mind....I looked out one day and saw a squirrel, taking out a plastic tag out of my pot....Then it all started to make sense.....

By Maggie on Thursday, October 23, 2003 - 9:52 pm: Edit Post

Okay David,,, you are in the clear.. Yesterday, I heard the distinct noise of clay pots crashing outside my study window, and there he was ,, a 'tag-stealing' squirrel climbing all over the pot benches and making messes. Then I remembered - they love to hide pecans in the loose soil of pot plants. So, that was probably what he was up to. Yours, on the other hand must have also felt the need to commit some random tag vandalism while sowing his treasure. :-)

And while I'm on this thread,, here's the best vari baby in the garden - the Tricolor Hibiscus. Look how much its grown since you brought it over last fall!
