Our friend Cheryl is known on the net as Mama Kane (MK) because she mothers her livestock as pets. Although most of her and hubby Ray's animals are the usual farm fare, it is a caring giving place more than a working farm. Her horse of many years acted as sheep herder, a turkey grows up with the ducks and thinks he is one, and the native deer have become hand-fed pets.
Cheryl has shared so much of their beautiful rural home in the hills through her astonishing photos and endearing tales of life on the farm that I have opened this new topic for her to continue to take us through the West Virginia seasons.
Feel free to open new threads anytime you wish MK

I can't believe it's almost the end of January. Seems like all I've accomplished this month is shovel snow and trudge through the snow to feed and water the animals - not easy on the back and very time consuming.
I guess that's not really true. We had a wonderful visit from the grandkids and family. They loved the snow, and sledding was a popular event. Plus there was homemade ice cream having the kids pack the ice cram maker with fresh snow. And when the temps got down in the single digits we went to the movie theater, a first for the kids.
Ryan (age 3) loved the sledding, but insisted that pulling the sled down the hill was safer than riding
I spent January afternoons shopping for a new light. It was difficult to find the type I wanted and not pay the prices they were asking. After much searching this is my latest home remodeling project.
the old light - here when we bought the place

It's time to start the seeds under the indoor lights. But first I want to get the room painted. It's tongue and groove wood, so takes a paint brush vs. the quicker roller. I'm not sure which will get done - the painting or the planting.
With over a foot of snow on the ground and night time temps still around 0* it's hard to think of the garden today. But the sun is SHINING! a definite improvement.

Could those ducks and sheepies pose any cuter!?!?
I am loving the new light fixture - perfect with the cottage lace curtains. Oh so cozy. I've been changing some of the wall colors here too. I think they probably look a lot better than words might portray :-0
What color are you doing the room? Is it the enclosed porch?
The snow baby picies - what fun. I'm glad we get to share your snow scenes without suffering those temps! But I did stay one year in PA at just the right age to really appreciate such weather - at the age when excellent sledding was worth risking frost bite
and much more fun than shoveling snow, I expect. Keep your nose and toes warm and take care on the ice oxoxo
After 18 days of temps not reaching above freezing we now have rain. Watch for "high water" pictures as all the snow melts quickly.
The new paint job is on a small bedroom upstairs. I had to move my plant table up there a couple of years ago when the dogs decided to start emptying the dirt on the floor. It's a mauve color, and will have white trim for contrast. I've been getting brave trying the darker colors - they seemed to fit this house. It's always been egg shell white, and pastels before.
