Doesn't it just make you want one! If only it would stay little, pink and huggy :)

They look so sweet, but they have needle-sharp teeth.

They are up and running around, so I will try to take some more pics today.

I hate to be city girl on the WWW for all to see BUT....is the mama and daddy pig pink too? Or is that a color that will fade with age? Is that one of the adults on the left?

Do I feel dumb? Ask me about a movie or theater and I can tell you anything. But pigs and cows and ducks don't scurry in my backyard. HOw deprived I feel when caro and mamakane share their idyllic country lifes!

By mamakane on Monday, February 25, 2002 - 9:47 pm: Edit Post

Well Gail, I think that's a good question. I may be a country gal now, but know nothing about pigs. We all learn as we go - I knew nothing about sheep and chickens 10 years ago :)

By Nicola on Tuesday, February 26, 2002 - 4:57 pm: Edit Post

Hi Carolyn
You have one there that looks like a Tamworth or is it just covered in mud? And yes they are just too cute for words.

The little brown and white piglet is a mystery to us.

I'll try to get a good pic of them tomorrow. You won't believe how fast they have grown!

Not to worry Gail. I always tell myself there is a lot more to gain from asking, than there is to lose from not. :)

Nicola – did you grow up in the country or just study swineology somewhere ? ;-)

Is that a very long tail on Momma? Now I'm a city gal, but I do know they usually have short curley things instead of cow-sized tails! I even cleaned my reading glasses to try and figure out the last pic :-)

I’m loving that middle pic Caro. They’re almost as cute as Terry’s baby Guinea pigs !,, naw, maybe even more so....
teehee

I think they are so ugly they're cute :) How do the other sows react toward the pigglets of another sow? - I see a little fellow exploring. Will that black and white one have banded babies like your little mystery?

Should we name this thread - Pig 101 by Carolyn?

Pig 101 by Carolyn

1. Sorry Gail, I missed your post, wasn't ignoring you. The boar was the same color as the sow. The pink color fades to a sort of white. Those kind are called Yorkshire.

2. The black and white sow (called a Hampshire), actually had 3 of the other sow's babies nursing on her yesterday while I was taking the pictures. When more than one sow has babies around the same time, the babies nurse on which ever sow is closest when they get hungry. The Hampshire should be pregnant and due anytime, however, without a pg test, its tough to know for sure until the teats start enlarging. The Hampshire's teats haven't changed yet, so its possible she isn't pg. If not........get your orders in for pork chops, bacon, sausage........

3. The tail is long, but is usually curled up. I noticed that yesterday as well, but didn't think anything about it.

4. Assuming the Hampshire is pg, her babies will be anything from pink like the others to black and white (pinkish white at first). The boar was a Yorkshire, so the coloring of the babies will be a surprise.

Well, this city gal just thought she knew what a pig tail should look like :-0 Now I need to see a pic of an adults tail when it is curled up!:-) I had no idea they grew so big.

At risk of making another assumption, I am thinking that the pig varieties are named after the English counties that developed the breeds, way back when. (same as old Terrier breeds)?

By Nicola on Monday, March 04, 2002 - 5:42 am: Edit Post

Hi Maggie I did grow up on the edges of the countryside but basically I just like pigs (that's why I married Jeffrey :-) ) The breeds are generally named after the areas where they were developed just like you said and some breeds do grow to an enormous size.

By Carolyn Crouch on Monday, March 04, 2002 - 9:59 pm: Edit Post

Thanx Nicola for the definitive word on history of the breed names. That is what I had thought too, but hadn't had time to actually look it up.

Wish I'd had the video cam out today. The little porkers were playing at attacking each other. They were hilarious, leaping out from behind things and jumping on the other sniglets.

Slightly off subject, Bandit the Dog had a litter of puppies today. They are cute as they can be, but sadly look more like the muttley father than the purebred mother. Will attempt to get pics of baby pigs and dogs tomorrow.

Sounds like a fertile year on the farm Caro!
Hope its not human-contagious :)
Puppies and piglets, and we get to see picies!!!
xoxoxo

Now I see why she is named Bandit. What a sweet face she has under that mask. What is her breed Caro? Her face makes me think wolfhound, but I don't really think I know what they look like. (and I wanna see more puppy pics too :) )

All week long, I've had one of the earlier sniglets piclets as my screen wallpaper - the group of five became 30! Now Mr Cutie Patutie above, will replace them. And look - now I can kinda see the huge adult tails, kinda curled ;-)

By Carolyn Crouch on Friday, March 08, 2002 - 6:15 am: Edit Post

Yep, Bandit is the best dog I've ever had. She has a wonderful disposition, is a poultry protector not a chicken killer. The only things she does that are annoying are: 1. eating eggs if she finds them first, and 2. burying treats in the flower beds if the humans stupidly give them to her while she is in the yard. She is a Great Pyrannes/ Anatolian Shepherd cross. The Anatolian are known for being very stubborn. Fortunately, Bandit's disposition comes from the sweet Great Pyrannes side.

By mamakane on Friday, March 08, 2002 - 6:18 am: Edit Post

Bandit sorta has a look on her face that says "How did this happen?" I like the pic of the single pigglet, looks so independent. I bet they are cute when they play.

Thanks Caro, for the farm visit. Enjoyed all your pics and the cutie pie animals. Would love to jump in and take that pup off your hands but hubby says "no more dogs!". I'm waiting for a weak moment(his, not mine). Being without a dog is just too lonesome when there are no kids around anymore.
