Hi Deborah,
When it comes to studying design, visit as many gardens as your can (virtually and in real time) and read all the books and magazines you can find on the style you like. Start a scrapbook of photos, notes and mag clippings of must-have features. Imagine where they would best serve the lay of your land and the family's lifestyle and needs. Eventually, you will see how they can all fit together.
For a faster route:
Down here, nurseries often do free or inexpensive design consultations to have the chance to sell you plants.
Or you could bring in the big guns (for big bucks) and hire a designer who will draw up a planting scheme and structures, as well as help you learn how to tend it. But you still have to have a vague idea of the main elements you require, to give them a starting point.
I guess garden making and tending is a lot like housekeeping - getting your first house and having to learn as you go, unless you want to take formal instruction.
If you have a county extension agency, see if they have a Master Gardeners org.
Or perhaps your local college has some classes.
See if your botanic gardens have a volunteer/training program.
Along with any of the above, books and magazines will help instruct and inspire you.
Best wishes
